My mother and I made rakakat (Lebanese cheese rolls) with it and we were blown away by the texture. I think we will a little bit more herbs, vinegar, and salt next time to enhance the flavor. Thank you so much for posting this!

That should be fine Tish. Not sure what amount to use though. A good rule to remember – less is more. So try adding one tablespoon at a time.

A few people have commented on having had bad results with this recipe – that it didn’t come out firm enough. I wanted to point out there is a huge difference in Agar Powder, and Agar Flakes. The recipe calls for Agar Powder, but if you used Agar Flakes, that could be why it didn’t come out? I think the ratio is for 1 tsp of Agar Powder, you would need 3 tsps of Agar Flakes for the equivalent. Just trying to offer suggestions as to what could have been the problem – you could very well have used the powder, and it still didn’t come out! I’m looking forward to trying this recipe. I’ll make it with the Agar powder, and see what kind of results I get. I’ll keep you posted!

Same here, flavour is good but it became a melted mess in the pan. As usual, I figured that I had done something wrong. Tried it again with same results.
My vegan guest took leftovers home to make toasted sandwiches from it which it will be perfect for.3 stars

Hi Miriam, we didn’t press the tofu beforehand. The moisture in the tofu helps with adding moisture to the halloumi.

I so miss Halloumi and your recipe looks just great, I will give it a try in the next days, perfect for this hot weather! Can I ask, did you press the tofu before? Thank you, Miriam

Hats off to you for your bold attempt. I thought I followed the recipe carefully, but mine did not come out very firm, It’s firm enough to slice, but softens, but mashes on pressure. When heated it softens more, and nearly melts. Any suggestions? Should I put more agar powder? The flavor is good, but not really halloumi flavored. I have loved all your vegan recipes. I think you’re probably the best site with the most authentic and tasty dishes. Thank you, and keep experimenting!
